You may already know about keeping your computer safe but if you don’t here is our brief guide to everything you need to know about mobile computing and security..
What is a notebook cable lock?
A notebook cable lock is either a numbered combination lock or key lock attached to a cable which you can secure to your laptop or notebook to deter theft. The locking part of the cable fits into the security slot (see Kensington standard below) on your computer and the other end of the cable is secured or tied around the most immoveable object you can find – usually a heavy table or similar.
It is an ideal solution for those of us who work away from the office, students living in dorms or studying outside and all of us who use our machines on the go.
The security slot can be found on the great majority of portable electronic equipment – everything from flat screen televisions to tablet PC’s. It is a small, reinforced slot into which you can attach a notebook cable lock and cable mechanism which acts as a deterrent for thieves and opportunistic criminals.
Check to see what security standard you have. The slot has been present on most laptops since the year 2000.

If you are like me then you probably find working with a laptop incredibly useful, time saving and productive. The sheer freedom you get when you can carry your desk, files, documents and contacts around with you has been one of the greatest boons to working humanity of the last 10-15 years. Maybe we work a little too much now with all this connectivity but what the hey – I enjoy my work.
With all that freedom of course, come added concerns about the security of our personal details and the business projects we are working on. I’m no secret agent or anything quite so glamorous and vital and my info isn’t of national importance but it’s fairly important to me and I would be distraught if it was taken from me. We’ve all heard the media stories about government computers, USB’s and CD-ROMs being left in bars, on trains and in taxis by absent minded officials
But when we work on the move, inevitably there is always this greater chance that we can lose those valuable projects, documents, personal information and business knowledge. Not forgetting of course, that valuable contact information! I’m sure everyone at some time in their lives has been momentarily forgetful and left something on the plane, train or auto mobile and regretted it.
As well as our human error, electronic equipment has always been a prime target for the criminal class due to its high resale value. There is a constant demand on the black market for cheap goods which are often stolen for high profits.
But we know all this don’t we? So how much is pc security worth to us? We all think it will never happen to us and then it does. It only takes a second for an opportunistic thief to slide the gadget off the coffee table while you’ve turned away and there gone like “Keyser Soze”.
It is worth investing in some form or pc security, whether that is a notebook cable lock or something else. Thieves aren’t everywhere and it would be depressing to live with that fear every day but they are a reality in cities and dense urban areas and it is up to us to take the necessary security measures that we can.
